After Hurricane Florence, was down graded to a tropical storm and hit in North Carolina, we got word the park in South Carolina will open in 2 days. Luckily they had minimal damage. So we get all packed up and made our way there.
We had to divert from the quickest way. While going through Charolette, NC, we came across Army National Guard filling sand bags. Due to all the water rising in the rivers and lakes in the area. So flooding was still occurring weeks after the storm had pasted.
Finally, we made it to Myrtle Beach, SC. We stayed at Ocean Lakes Family Campground. And wow, first we were one of the first to get in the park after the storm.
Ocean Lakes Family Campground was built by Mary Emily and Nelson Jackson along with their five daughters, starting in 1970. On July 2, 1971, Ocean Lakes opened with 30 campsites and one bathhouse. Nelson Jackson was 50 years old at the time.
“People were lined up outside the gate by the hundreds and we were clearing spots for their campers as fast as they could park ‘em,” he explains with a smile.
Today, Ocean Lakes features 859 campsites and 2,560 annual lease sites on 310 oceanfront acres with nearly one mile of beachfront, five bathhouses, and more than 360 employees in the height of the camping season. It is the largest campground on the east coast and one of the largest in the United States.
Our view from our coach, home for the next week. Can’t get much better than this. So many sites are just steps away from your RV. But don’t worry, if you have stuff to haul down to the beach, they have golf carts available to rent for the day or for you time there.
Because of the storm, we hit the jackpot on sea shells. There was more than we had ever seen before. And of course we collected a few. How can you not. After a couple of days, the shells were all gone. Once the camp opened, the people gathered as many shells as they could.
The park is a huge park, they have homes that are rentals, some are owned and used during summer season. And then they have to RV sites. They have beautiful homes, most are big enough for large families, or multi family vacations.
Because we got there at the end of September, they already started decorating for Halloween, which they have so many fun events for families.
Ocean Lakes Family Campground has so many events on their calendar, when checking in you get a calendar to help you navigate your time there.
Oh the beach, that was one of our favorite places to be. We took the paddle boards out, and relaxed in the sun. You can pack your lunch, or you can just leave your stuff and go back to you site to eat, we were so close that one went to get the food and brought it back. Picnic’s on the beach are some of the best.
We tools advantage of the long beaches, we walked to the pier, its about a 3 mile walk around trip.
We love angel wings, so when we saw this on the building while driving we stopped to get a picture! There is all kinds of great jews like this all over the place, just keep your eyes open.
We loved this park, and will for sure return.
Oh and we mention, the Myrtle Beach is the Mini Golf Capital of the World….
We had to go, and yes, The Captain brought his own putter!
We had such a great time. But he won by A LOT!!! But we had fun and met some great people while playing. You never know unless you just say Hi
After the Mini Golf we hit the boardwalk, and had the Mermaid’s Birthday dinner. Check it out, they have a ferris wheel, and tons of shops, along with food.
